Metrotown Skytrain Station Upgrade Project – UPDATE

Metrotown Skytrain Station Upgrade Project – UPDATE

Please be advised of the latest update on Translink’s Metrotown skytrain station upgrade project.  The following information is from Translink:

•    To accommodate the widening of the walkway adjacent to the bus loop on the west side, the walkway will temporarily close starting Monday, May 8 and expected to reopen on Friday evening on May 12. When construction is complete, the new walkway will be 3 metres wide—double the width of the existing walkway. A wider path will allow for safer customer access to and from Metrotown Station.

There will be no access between the west crosswalk onto Central Boulevard to the main station entrance during the time of work. Customers can use the east crosswalk to enter and exit the station. Additional traffic flaggers and staff will be on site to help direct customers out of the station to the bus loop, mall and other key destinations. The walkway closure will not affect SkyTrain or bus service.

•    On Friday, March 24, 2017 at noon the centre stationhouse will open, revealing a new central entrance. Two new elevators will go into service and a new permanent staircase will open (the temporary staircase will be dismantled). With these upgrades, customers on the platform can take the elevator, new stairs or the emergency exit stairs on the west side of the station to access Central Boulevard.

•    The Community Shuttle for passengers travelling with strollers will end on March 24, 2017.

•    The HandyDART shuttle will end on March 31, 2017, one week after the elevators open.

•    Customers requiring the use of an elevator are advised to use the wider accessible pathway from the station by using the east crosswalk at the mall parkade entrance.

•    Once the remaining elevator completes testing, commissioning, and inspecting, it will also open. All elevators are expected to be open by May 2017.

•    There is currently no escalator access at the station, only stairs and elevators. Four new escalators (two up and two down) will open at the west stationhouse in the summer.

•    Customers are reminded to tap in and out at the fare gates to ensure they are charged the correct fare.
